The Program is designed to accept high school graduates who, after successful and comprehensive training, will be able to provide effective emergency pre-hospital health care, under the guidance of the Head of the Ambulance Service or medical or nursing ambulance crew, to people of all ages in the community and in the hospital.
The program aims to provide knowledge, develop skills, and critical thinking for immediate response to emergency and urgent health situations and safe transport to a health facility, in accordance with standards, guidelines, and applicable legislation.
The Program is evaluated and certified by the Body for Quality Assurance and Certification of Higher Education.
The current situation in Cyprus in the Emergency Prehospital Care Sector is in a transitional stage. In recent years and with the continuous shortage of Nursing staff, the Existing Prehospital Care Services are facing serious deficits in terms of staffing at safe levels. After 5 years of offering the Paramedic - Ambulance Crew Diploma program on a 2-year basis and with more than 120 graduates, it is considered imperative to upgrade these specialized health professionals to a three-year course of study so that they in turn cooperate effectively and support the Public and Private Providers of Emergency and Prehospital Care Services. The addition of another year of academic theoretical, laboratory and clinical training will prepare the new qualified scientists of the Emergency Prehospital Care Sector.
Recently, in June 2025, the Legislation governing the Registration of the Profession of the Paramedic, the Creation of a Scientific Council, the Creation of a Professional Association was voted by the House of Representatives, as well as providing for the Scientific Upgrade to 3 years of study.
Cypriot law sets out the terms and conditions for a rescuer to work as a Paramedic. Specifically, the legislation states that in Public and Private Ambulance Services, members other than nurses and doctors who will work in Ambulances must hold a relevant diploma.
Frederick Institute of Technology, consistent with its mission, undertakes initiatives to meet the health needs of Cypriot society. The Rescuer Program is the first program offered in Cyprus and contributes substantially to alleviating the above situation. The country's needs for specialized professionals, paramedics are great.
Graduates of the program can work in Public or Private Sector Emergency and Pre-Hospital Care Services. More than 50% of graduates work in the Public Service, 40% work in Private Ambulance Services, while about 5%-10% have continued their studies in Nursing.
Employment prospects of graduates: A health professional with the diploma of Rescuer-Ambulance Crew, can be employed in a pre-hospital environment, in the public and private sector in hospitals, health centers, rural health centers, clinics in water and air transport and wherever else in the community requires the transportation of patients by ambulance and the provision of immediate health interventions.
Students are accepted to enroll at Frederick Institute of Technology based on their qualifications, regardless of gender, race, national origin, color, and religion.
General Admission Criteria: Students enrolled for a diploma must submit to the Student Registration Service a diploma of a recognized Greek-speaking Secondary Education school with a general grade of 15 out of 20 (75%) or a grade "C" for the other equivalent schools of Secondary Education or other equivalent qualifications. Candidates who submit a secondary school leaving certificate but do not meet the above grade requirements may be admitted under supervision or 'probationary' status, provided that they are eligible for educational advancement. The supervision status will be abolished, subject to satisfactory academic performance. Candidates who are admitted under supervision may also be invited to enrol in preparatory courses of the College in order to improve their skills and/or receive a reduced course load.
